Web & Video Conferencing now play a key role in your business sales strategy beyond having meetings.
The blending of the Sales and Marketing departments has tried to take shape over the past 30 years. Ever since the world-wide-web came on the scene, only the businesses that have adapted new technology, have not struggled to marry the two departments.
The Harvard Business Review said that “Sales people accuse marketers of being out of touch with what customers really want or setting prices too high. Marketers insist that sales people focus too myopically on individual customers and short-term sales at the expense of longer-term profits. The Result? Poor coordination between the two teams — which only raises market-entry costs, lengthens sales cycles, and increases cost of sales.”
So how do you merge the two department effectively? It all lies in a strategy to layout and implement the big picture of departmental integration.
We’re not that different – Marketing as a discipline, has its roots in sales.
Unfortunately, over time, due perhaps to the ambitions of the new science of marketing, the two became separate, and in many cases, estranged. But a reunification of the two is inevitable; perhaps imminent. This marketer (the lead-writer of this blog)has had a front-row seat in the arena of sales and marketing management for a very long time, and is of the considered view that in another 10 years, there will no longer be a separate marketing and sales department in most companies.
By then marketing as practised by most companies will be dead; and so too the sales guru. The training in the psychology of selling, and ‘solutions selling’ (a practice introduced by John Henry Patterson at NCR way back in 1895 – a time when salesmen rode horses), will have long become irrelevant.
Moving forward to today.
Consider that a webinar or a webcast is also simply a marketing/sales meeting with others online. Top companies use webinars & webcasting for product launches, new product overview, visual strategic planning, and much more, all surrounding the sales of their ‘widget’.
The inevitable: Marketing and Sales fusion.
